The Democratic Party is a powerful coalition of volunteers, voters, and leaders working together from the ground up. But who does what? Here’s a quick guide to how the party is structured—from the national level to your local neighborhood.

Democratic National Committee (DNC)

National Leadership & Strategy

The DNC sets the direction for the Democratic Party nationwide. It supports Democratic candidates for federal office—especially the presidency—while building the infrastructure and resources needed to win elections across the country. The DNC also organizes the Democratic National Convention and coordinates digital tools, messaging, and fundraising efforts to help Democrats succeed at every level.

State Democratic Parties

Organizing Statewide Power

Every state has its own Democratic Party organization (like the Arizona Democratic Party), which leads Democratic efforts across the state. State parties support legislative and statewide Democratic candidates, manage voter outreach programs, and help train grassroots organizers. They also help to administer party business and affairs, as well as preparations for the national convention, keeping the state connected to the national party.

County Democratic Parties

Connecting Communities to the Party

County parties—like the Pima County Democratic Party—are the heart of grassroots politics. They focus on organizing volunteers, supporting local candidates, registering voters, and helping elect Democrats to county-level and nonpartisan offices like school boards. County parties bring the energy of the state and national party directly to your community.

Legislative District (LD) Committees

Neighborhood-Level Organizing

LD committees operate within Arizona’s legislative district boundaries and are made up of the most local leaders in the Democratic Party—often your neighbors. LDs focus on electing Democrats to the Arizona Legislature, recruiting precinct committee members (PCs), and organizing door-to-door outreach, house parties, and local events. They play a key role in turning out voters block by block.
