PCDP Chair Denounces Protests At Officials’ Homes

The Pima County Democratic Party denounces a recent protest, and an announcement of upcoming protests, in front of Tucson Mayor Regina Romero’s house. Protest can be an effective form of free speech, but taking protests to the homes of elected officials–or anyone– can be perceived as threatening. Everyone has the right to feel safe in their own home. I did reach out to my GOP counterpart regarding this issue. He looked into the matter and assured me that the Pima County GOP did not sanction the event last weekend, nor did they plan any such future events. He very clearly stated that he considered this action completely inappropriate.

Protests should be staged at public venues. Bringing protests to a private home escalates it from free speech to a form of intimidation. This cannot be the new normal in Tucson.

Alison Jones, Chair of the Pima County Democratic Party.

Medicare for All Means Healthcare for All

Medicare for All Means Healthcare for All

By Eve Shapiro, M.D. and Richard Wiebe*

As paychecks disappear for millions of Americans, so does their health insurance — at the worst possible time.

The COVID-19 pandemic exposes the most fundamental flaw of the for-profit health insurance system:  Lose your job, lose your healthcare. Over 44 million Americans have filed for unemployment benefits; the Kaiser Family Foundation estimates that 27 million will lose their health insurance.

Medicare for All means healthcare for all – with or without a job.  It operates under the principle that healthcare is a right, not a privilege reserved for those who can afford it.  When you get sick, you go to the doctor with no worries about deductibles and co-payments.

Volunteer Spotlight | Joanie Allison

Volunteer Spotlight | Joanie Allison

By Richard Wiebe

Golfers Joanie and Jim Allison grew to love Tucson during their February visits to Dove Mountain’s Accenture Match Play Championship golf tournament. When asked about her proficiency as a golfer, Joanie would only say the greenskeepers of Alexandria, VA, celebrated when the Allisons retired to Tucson in 2012.

Joanie leads Thursday’s morning and afternoon volunteer crews at PCDP headquarters. Now working from home, she returns phone calls and answers questions about everything from voter registration to road repair. Her favorite calls are inquiries about registering as a Democrat.

“I enjoy interacting with the public, and I look forward to returning to the office and our merry band of volunteers,” she said.  “Alison and Cat are so supportive. We all learn from each other, but Alison and Cat are special.”

Democrats believe in science, which makes it hard for us to understand how some people are responding to the COVID-19 pandemic. Why did Trump disband the White House Pandemic Task Force in 2018? Scientists were telling him that a pandemic was a matter of...
