Join our Discussion 4 Democracy series as we sit down, in person, with Democratic candidates running for Arizona Governor!
What does the Governor do?
The Governor of Arizona is the highest state office in Arizona and has an assortment of essential duties. As the head of the executive branch, the governor must implement and enforce state laws.
The governor also works indirectly with the Arizona legislature by submitting state budget proposals and approving or vetoing laws. The governor is the Commander in Chief of the state’s National Guard and oversees the selection of political appointees.
Who are the Democratic candidates?
Katie Hobbs’ public service work started in the social sector, where she provided resources for victims of domestic abuse. As a first hand witness to a broken system, Katie ran for the Arizona House and won, subsequently moving up the ladder from the House, to the Senate, to the Senate Minority Leader and finally to the Secretary of State. It was this position that made Katie Hobbs a household name, as she delivered a trustworthy and secure 2020 election for Arizona voters despite GOP attacks at every step along the way. Hobbs wants to continue fighting for Arizona as governor by creating quality jobs and strengthening the education system to ensure Arizona’s prosperity for years to come. (As of 5/18/22, Katie Hobbs will not be joining the forum)
Lieberman has dropped out of the race.
Before Aaron Lieberman was ever an elected official, he headed two non-profits that helped nearly 1 million young children get better prepared for school. After being elected to represent the people of Arizona’s District 28, he aimed to bring his business knowledge and problem solving skills to the Arizona Legislature. During his tenure fought for Covid-19 relief funding, community college scholarships and more. Arron wants to continue his dedication to Arizona as governor by strengthening the economy, properly funding our public schools and protecting the environment through conservation and the development of renewable energy infrastructure.
Marco Lopez started his political career after he was elected mayor of his hometown, Nogales AZ at only 22 years old. Marco went on to serve as the Director of the Arizona Department of Commerce and then as a security official for the Obama Administration. Since then, Marco has been running his own business which to date, has brought high speed internet to 1 million low income families and is on track to create 15,000 jobs right here in Arizona. Marco has a strong belief in the American Dream, and believes he can make this dream a reality in Arizona by addressing voter suppression, investing in education and the economy and protecting Arizona’s precious natural resources.
