HQ Update | August 2020

HQ Update | August 2020

I’m so excited to have been chosen to serve as your new Executive Director. After nearly two decades serving our country overseas as a Foreign Service Officer, this election was too important to stay neutral. We witnessed a demonstration of America’s potential last week, this is the correct choice for this moment in history.

Though we’re still largely virtual, HQ operations continue apace. We’ve installed security cameras and are servicing the A/C system and computers. Leila and I are at HQ M-Sa and limited volunteers are here afternoons M-F.

Meet Zoey Fife, PCDP Recording Secretary

Meet Zoey Fife, PCDP Recording Secretary

The role of Recording Secretary is vital to every organization, and the Pima County Democratic Party is no exception. Zoey Fife was appointed to that job last August and elected to the post at PCDP’s annual meeting in November.

In addition to taking minutes at monthly meetings, Zoey enjoys pitching in with PCDP events, like the Udall dinner and the mayor’s inaugural luncheon.
When events come off without a hitch, I feel like something important was accomplished,” she said. “I look forward to the day we can safely meet in person and celebrate our hard work through the pandemic.”

PCDP Chair Denounces Protests At Officials’ Homes

The Pima County Democratic Party denounces a recent protest, and an announcement of upcoming protests, in front of Tucson Mayor Regina Romero’s house. Protest can be an effective form of free speech, but taking protests to the homes of elected officials–or anyone– can be perceived as threatening. Everyone has the right to feel safe in their own home. I did reach out to my GOP counterpart regarding this issue. He looked into the matter and assured me that the Pima County GOP did not sanction the event last weekend, nor did they plan any such future events. He very clearly stated that he considered this action completely inappropriate.

Protests should be staged at public venues. Bringing protests to a private home escalates it from free speech to a form of intimidation. This cannot be the new normal in Tucson.

Alison Jones, Chair of the Pima County Democratic Party.
